What is DVT and how does it relate to flying?

Deep Vein Thrombosis, DVT is a condition in which a blood clot or ‘thrombus’ forms in the deep veins of the legs.

DVT can result in no symptoms, or it can cause swelling and pain in the affected leg, for example, pain in the calf when the foot is flexed upwards.

An ongoing investigation by the World Health Organization (WHO) — WHO Research Into Global Hazards of Travel (WRIGHT) Project on Air Travel and Venous Thromboembolism — has found that the risk of DVT approximately doubles after a long-haul flight (more than 4 hours). This increased risk also applies to other forms of travel (such as car, bus or train) where people are exposed to prolonged seated immobility. The risk increases with the duration of travel and with multiple flights within a short period.

Small or long travel flights can leave negative stress build up in between the joints and the spine. Leaving the muscles to tighten up and shoulder pain and back pain to raise up. DVT is another condition that should not be taken lightly.Try these simple stretches in between your flight and always remember to go for a walk down the aisles to stretch your legs.

Brahmi is a rejuvenating herb for brain cells and nerves. Hence, it is particularly used to treat cognitive disorders associated with aging. Morpheme Brahmi capsules contains the pure extract of the herb and is effective in boosting memory, calming aggressive moods and relieves your stress. Besides, the supplement also prevents behavioral deficits, which is mainly caused due to neural malfunction.

  • As a ‘Cardiotonic’
  • Acts as an antifungal agent

  • Relieves anxiety and stress

How Brahmi is Useful?

Bacopa monnieri or Brahmi is used by herbalists, especially in India due to its varied benefits. It is crowned as the ‘Queen of Ayurveda’ and is touted as an anti-depression, pro-memory and anti-anxiety agent. These properties of the herb are demonstrated effectively in every study. Bacopa Monnieri is quite successful in retaining the learned information in healthy people. It helps in reducing the rate of short-term forgetfulness while increasing the speed of retention.

Besides the rate of learning, the herb when taken in a dosage of 300 mg every day helps in delayed recall, verbal learning, and improves memory. This is recommended for healthy people in the age group of 18 – 60 years with two 150 mg dosage. People with impaired memory are recommended a dosage of 125 mg everyday, which is somewhat effective. The extract of Bacopa Monnieri or Brahmi increases the memory formation with the aid of enzyme Tryptophan Hydroxylase – TPH2 and by enhancing the expression of SERT – Serotonin transporter.

In addition, branching points and dendritic intersections in neurons are proliferated with the supplementation of brahmi after 4 – 6 weeks. However, a study showed that it did not lead to any changes at two weeks. It was noted that the neuronal growth effect occurred in both younger and adult rats in the hippocampus as well as basolateral amygdale regions of the brain. Such changes coincide with the studies that show memory enhancement in humans. Studies have been conducted to investigate the ability of Bacopa Monnieri to decrease dopaminergic neuronal death, which is usually seen in Parkinson’s disease. As an adaptogen, the herb can decrease the physiological effects of stress. It has shown to decrease HSP70 expression (bio-marker of stress) in reaction to stress in all regions of the brain, but most notably in the hippocampus.

Research conducted by the Pediatrics Department, AIMS in New Delhi has showed that the extracts of Brahmi have improved the outlook of the brain’s subnormalities in children. The tonic property of the herb helps in improving long and short-term memory. This is perhaps due to its ability to induce protein and enzyme synthesis in some areas of the brain like hippocampus (the region of the brain, where memory is developed), which is responsible for creating newer moments for memorizing. In addition, the herb is known to nourish the neurons, which in turn improves the retention capacity and eliminates unwanted anxieties.

Due to its relaxing effects on brain, it is used to treat depression. According to Ayurvedic Scholars, the herb is quite effective in enhancing the learning ability and grasping power. Bacoposides, the alkaloids present in Brahmi are responsible for sharpening the memory and relieving stress. The herb is quite helpful in problems like common forgetfulness that occurs due to stressful lifestyle. Moreover, the herb is safe for every day use and even children can use them to get the benefits of the herb. It also increases the stamina, concentrating power and provides relief from headache. Unlike modern medications, brahmi does not have major harmful or unwanted effects.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a popular spice for cooking, but it has a long history of medicinal uses, too. It is one of the most researched natural remedies available and there are numerous studies validating its healing properties. Turmeric provides a wide variety of benefits, but there are seven standouts. Once you know about these seven benefits you’ll be eager to add the spice to your diet.

Turmeric health benefits
Antioxidant

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which is known as a powerful antioxidant. This means it targets dangerous free radicals in the body and reduces the damage they are able to cause DNA and cells. When cells are healthy the body is healthy, which means turmeric offers general wellness benefits, as well as targeting specific health problems.

Anti-Inflammatory

Curcumin also has anti-inflammatory qualities. This makes it effective for fighting heart disease, osteoarthritis pain, and other health problems related to inflammation (researchers believe there are many links between inflammation and chronic illness). Curcumin is believed to reduce certain enzymes in the body known to trigger inflammation.

Heart Health

Turmeric reduces the risk of blood clots and prevents the build up of plaque in the arteries, which helps in the battle against stroke and other clot-related problems. There are also studies showing turmeric is beneficial for reducing bad cholesterol and improving good cholesterol, both of which play a role in a person’s heart health.

Slows the Progression of Alzheimer’s

Researchers studying the effects of curcumin in relation to Alzheimer’s cite the health of those living in regions that consume turmeric in high quantities. People in India aged 70 and older have a much lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease than those in the same age group in the United States. Many believe this difference is due to the high intake of Indian curries, which are made with turmeric. Further research points to turmeric’s ability to remove amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain, which is believed to put people at risk for developing the Alzheimer’s.

Natural Painkiller

An article in the July 2009 issue of Time magazine points to a study conducted at the University of Arizona. Researchers found rodents injected with a material known to cause joint pain suffered less when the injections were paired with curcumin. The article also cites anecdotal evidence singing the praises of turmeric for fighting a variety of pain that would otherwise be treated with over-the-counter pain medication.

Skin Health

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory benefits can be beneficial when applied topically, too. It is considered an effective treatment for psoriasis and other skin disorders, and it is a natural antiseptic and can be used to treat burns and cuts.

Cancer Fighter

The jury is still out on just how effective turmeric is for fighting cancer. Some health experts point to its anti-inflammatory benefits and draw conclusions based on the link between inflammation and the development of cancer. Free radicals and cell damage are believed to be linked to cancer, too, so if turmeric is able to work as an antioxidant it has a secondary anti-cancer effect.

According to well-known holistic health practitioner, Dr. Andrew Weil, turmeric reduces the carcinogenic compound that form when meat is fried, grilled, or boiled by up to 40%. Dr. Weil also believes turmeric is effective for fighting melanoma and in halting the spread of breast cancer.

There are also preliminary studies showing turmeric could be beneficial for preventing breast, prostate, skin, and colon cancer. Since turmeric is safe and offers a variety of general heath benefits, you have nothing to lose by adding it to your diet in moderate amounts. If you plan to use concentrated doses of curcumin in your cancer treatment plan, be sure you inform your doctors to prevent any interference with other components of your treatment.
